The Winthrop baseball team will look to even the score as it plays host to The Citadel on Tuesday and USC Upstate on Wednesday.
The Eagles (15-8, 1-2 Big South) dropped games to both teams earlier in the year, playing each less than 24 hours after wins over Clemson and South Carolina. Both of this week’s games are scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Winthrop Ballpark.
Roger Gonzalez is leading the Eagles with a .417 batting average, 32 hits, and 18 RBI. The junior catcher hit .560 last week and had 14 hits including the game-winner against nationally ranked South Carolina. Freshman pitcher Freddie Sultan earned his first career win in the Eagles 17-7 win against Gardner-Webb over the weekend. The Winthrop pitching staff has combined for an ERA of 3.26.
The Citadel (14-8) had a nine-game winning streak snapped over the weekend, dropping the final game a weekend series with UMBC 8-5. The Bulldogs have four batters hitting over .300 this season, led by senior Connor Walsh. Walsh has a team high 29 hits, nine doubles and 26 RBI. The Bulldogs’ throwers are averaging 4.34 earned runs per game, and have allowed 128 runs this season.
The Spartans (8-15) have lost nine out of their last ten games and four straight. Zach Krider, Erik Samples and Daniel Fickas are tied for the most hits with 28 each and account for 84 of Upstate’s 208 hits. Krider is leading the Spartans with a .378 batting average and is tied with Charlie Carpenter in RBI with 20 each. The Spartans’ pitchers have compiled an ERA of 6.43, allowing 165 runs on 266 hits.
