Eagles, Kennesaw State play to a 1-1 draw in women’s soccer

The Winthrop women’s soccer team earned a 1-1 draw Friday night against Kennesaw State in the season opener for both teams at Eagle Field.

Winthrop will have a quick turnaround as the Eagles head to Alabama A&M for a 3 p.m. start on Sunday.

How it happened

Winthrop went up 1-0 in the 76th minute as sophomore Gianna Giroux found the back of the net off a free kick. From 30 yards out, Giroux ripped a shot toward goal that ricocheted off a Kennesaw defender and beat the keeper into the net.

Kennesaw State tied the match in the 87th minute as Ashtah Das knocked a shot from the side of the 18-yard box over the outstretched hand of Winthrop goalkeeper Kelly Horan and into the side netting.

Stats of note

Sophomore Gabi Hull along with Giroux both finished with three shots. Horan, in her first collegiate start, finished with three saves while allowing just one goal.

Next home match

Following their trip to Alabama, the Eagles will return home to Eagles Field on Aug. 27 for a 1 p.m. contest against North Florida.
