Winthrop’s Crohan named Big South baseball pitcher of the week
Sophomore Matt Crohan was named the Big South Conference baseball pitcher of the week for the week of March 23-29.
Monday marked the first time Crohan has received this honor in his career.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound sophomore from Jamesport, N.Y., earned his third win of the season in Winthrop’s 3-0 victory over Coastal Carolina on Sunday. In the longest start of his career, the southpaw pitched eight innings and held the Chanticleers to just one hit, while walking three and striking out 12. The win snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Chanticleers who did not reach past first base.
Crohan made 17 appearances as a freshman for Winthrop, but cracked the weekend starting rotation this season. He’s 4-3 with a 2.00 ERA, 47 strikeouts and just 10 walks. Crohan has at least six strikeouts in six of his seven starts for Tom Riginos’ club.
Winthrop and Crohan return home to take on Davidson Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark.
