Winthrop women’s basketball hands out end of season awards
The Winthrop women’s basketball team handed out annual awards Monday night. Junior Schaquilla Nunn took home a box full of honors to lead the way.
Nunn, a 6-foot-3 center, received the team awards for block shots leader, rebounding leader, field goal percentage leader, and co-defensive player of the year along with sophomore guard Aliyah Kilpatrick. Nunn finished her junior season ranked ninth in the nation for blocked shots with 3.63, and 15th in rebounding with 11.1 per game. She was also a All-Big South first team selection and the Big South defensive player of the year, and the conference’s statistical leader in blocks and rebounds.
In addition to being selected for the team’s co-defensive player award, Kilpatrick received awards for steals leader and free throws percentage leader. sophomore forward Erica Williams received the scoring leader and assist leader awards. Senior Samiya Wright was presented the 3-Point Award for most three-pointers made.
Sophomore CiiCii Buford was presented the Hustle Award while senior Taylor Calvert received the Captains Award. The Coach Cook Award went to freshman guard Naima Jackson, and Ezinne Mbamalu was named freshman of the year. Junior forward Zoe Vernon received the Dr. DiGiorgio Academic Award.
Winthrop (17-13, 13-7) finished fourth in the 11-team league. The Eagles have now had four straight winning seasons for the first time in school history and seniors Calvert and Wright won 80 games during their careers, another first for the program’s record book.
Women’s lacrosse: Goalie Alaina Girani picked up her second Big South defensive player of the week award after helping the Eagles shut down Cincinnati last week.
In the Eagles’ only contest last week against Cincinnati, Girani picked up her eighth victory in limiting the Bearcats to five goals and also making five saves. Girani is currently second in the Big South and 28th in Div. I in goals against average.
Winthrop opens conference play Saturday at Presbyterian at 1 p.m.
Men’s tennis: The Eagles fell to S.C. State 5-2 in Orangeburg.
The Eagles (11-5) fell behind early losing the doubles competition.
Winthrop hosts Big South foe Liberty on Thursday in Rock Hill, at 1 p.m.
Men’s golf: Sophomore Zach Seabolt tied for ninth place while the Eagles finished 14th in the 15-team field of the 54-hole 2015 Hootie At Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, which concluded Tuesday afternoon at the Bulls Bay Golf Club.
Seabolt finished with a 6-under 210 on the Par 72, 7,363-yard course.
Women’s tennis: Mariana Humberg was named Big South freshman of the week after posting a perfect 4-0 record during the week of March 23-29, boosting Winthrop to a pair of conference victories. Alongside Alice Garcia at the No. 1 doubles slot, she defeated Gardner-Webb (8-2) and Campbell (8-6). At No. 3 singles position, Humberg claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gardner-Webb as well as a 6-3, 6-4 win over Campbell.
The Eagles host Liberty on Friday in Rock Hill, at 11 a.m.
