Hasenstab hat-trick sparks Winthrop shutout win

Max Hasenstab’s hat-trick guided Winthrop to a 3-0 men’s soccer win over Wofford Sunday night in Rock Hill.

Hasenstab opened the scoring in the 33rd minute on an assist from freshman defender and former Nation Ford Falcon Michael Smith, before scoring twice in the final 13 minutes of the contest, one of which came on another assist from Smith.

Winthrop withstood an early offensive assault from the visitors, Wofford hitting the crossbar twice in the first five minutes. Keeper Kenneth Perkinson made a big save after Hasenstab’s second goal; Perkinson recorded his third career shutout for the Eagles, while Hasenstab’s hat-trick was his third. The German has 37 career goals at Winthrop.
