Winthrop baseball outlasts High Point

Pitchers Matt Crohan and Travis Shelley held High Point hitless in the final three innings to hold on to a 3-2 victory for the Winthrop baseball team on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Crohan improves to 4-2 and remains undefeated in conference games. The sophomore allowed two runs on four hits in 7 1/3 innings. Shelley earned his second save of the year, holding the Panthers (16-14, 6-3) hitless in the final 1 2/3 innings. High Point’s Scot Hoffman took the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits.

Brad Kaczka opened up scoring for the Eagles (20-12, 3-6), coming home on a sacrifice bunt by Clay Altman after singling and advancing to third on a single by John Menken.

The Eagles increased the lead to 3-0 with two runs in the third inning. Tyler Asbill led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk by Mitch Spires. Asbill scored on a double to left centerfield by Anthony Paulsen that advanced Spires to third. Spires crossed the plate as Roger Gonzalez grounded out.

Josh Spano hit solo home runs over the left field fence in the fourth and sixth innings to score High Point’s two runs.

Coach Tom Riginos was very proud of his team’s resiliency. “Our team played with a lot of toughness today,” said Riginos. “It would have been very easy for them to just roll over after the losses yesterday, but our pitchers but us in a good position, we were solid defensively and we played tough.”

The Eagles will now begin a six-game road slate starting with Furman on Monday at 5 p.m.
