Winthrop roundup: Kasmarik, Eagle women earn lacrosse win
Senior Jenna Kasmarik tallied seven goals and freshman Kristen Shriver totaled six points Saturday afternoon to lead the Winthrop women’s lacrosse team to a 16-4 victory over the Presbyterian Blue Hose in the team’s conference opener.
The Eagles improved to 9-2 on the season and 1-0 in the conference with the victory while Presbyterian fell to 3-7 overall and 0-1 in the Big South.
Kasmarik’s seven goals came on 13 shots while she also had three draw controls. Shriver finished with six points on two goals and four assists while junior Shannon Gallagher totaled four points with two goals and two assists. Junior Danielle Ellis notched two goals and one assist while fellow junior Abigail Blevins had one goal and two assists.
Junior Hayley Krause led the Eagles with five draw controls while Gallagher, freshman Madison Cassidy and junior Maggie Montanye each picked up three ground balls. Cassidy also tied for the team lead in caused turnovers with three. Freshman Alaina Girani picked up the victory, allowing just four goals and making three saves.
The Eagles totaled 40 shots Saturday afternoon to Presbyterian’s 11. Winthrop won the ground ball and draw control battles 20-11 and 14-8 respectively.
The Eagles return Monday against Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m. at Eagle Field.
Softball
Charleston Southern 3, Winthrop 2 (12): It was a game of missed opportunities as the Eagles fell in North Charleston, after 12 innings in the final game of the three-game series.
It was the second game this week for the Eagles (15-21, 4-7 Big South) that went at least 11 innings. The Eagles will look to rebound on Tuesday as they host Presbyterian for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
After the Eagles were unable to drive in Haley Zuehlke from third base and one out, Charleston Southern (26-16, 8-4) won the game in the bottom of the 12th on a single to center as Natalie Yonan swung at the first pitch that scored Brook Richardson from third.
Men’s Tennis
Winthrop 4, Radford 3: The Eagles continued their Big South dominance at Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.
Winthrop grabbed the early lead by sweeping the doubles competition.
Winthrop (12-6) faces Presbyterian on Friday in Clinton, at 1 p.m.
Women’s Tennis
Coastal Carolina 5, Winthrop 2: The Eagles suffered in Myrtle Beach.
Winthrop fell behind early losing the doubles competition.
Winthrop (10-11) conclude regular season play against UNC Asheville on Friday at 2 p.m.
