Winthrop Notebook: Women’s lacrosse beats Coastal Carolina
Freshman goalie Alaina Girani recorded 10 saves Sunday afternoon as the Winthrop lacrosse team downed the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 12-4, extending its win streak to five games.
Winthrop improved to 12-2, 4-0 Big South while Coastal Carolina fell to 7-5, 2-2.
Logan McCarthy totaled four points with three goals and one assist while Jenna Kasmarik also tallied three goals.
Tennis
The Eagles’ men’s team dropped a 6-1 match to Coastal Carolina in their final regular season match.
Winthrop had some tough singles losses only taking the No. 2 position, in which No. 2 Dylan Comerford upended Kaue Pereira 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Winthrop concludes regular season play with a 12-8 record, 5-3 in the Big South.
Track & Field
The Eagles’ women’s and men’s track and field teams turned in strong performances over the weekend at the Catamount Classic hosted by Western Carolina.
Three school records fell during the two-day meet as the Eagle women finished second out of 15 schools while the men were third out of 13. Western Carolina finished first in both competitions. The men had 10 top six finishes while the women had 12.
Sophomore Marthaline Cooper eclipsed her previous mark with a hammer throw of 58.12 meters to capture first place. Senior men’s hurdler Andrew Chavous finished first in the 400 meter hurdles with a record time of 52.57 while junior Ashlee Eady set a record in the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.65 meters as she claimed fourth place.
The men’s squad also had a first place finish by freshman Preston Elwell in the javelin, who won with a throw of 56.87 meters.
Senior sprinter Carlo Raiteri claimed second place in the 100 meter (10.8) and 200 meter (21.33) dashes. Quemell Brave took second place in the high jump with a leap of 1.97 meters. Senior Jakeb Elliott had two second place finishes with a discus throw of 45.63 meters and a hammer throw of 50.41 meters.
The performances by Chavous and Raiteri moved them up into the top 48 rankings that qualify for the NCAA first round in Jacksonville, Fla.
Carmen Rollizo finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 11.26 meters. Alesha Love and Shalace Rose teamed up with Sydney Smith and Taryn DeLeon to finished second in the 1600 meter relay with a time of 3:52.84.
