Winthrop freshman finishes fifth at Big South Conference women’s golf championship

Winthrop freshman Ashley Sloup finished in a three-way tie for fifth place at the rain-shortened 2015 Big South Women’s Golf Championship. The Eagle women tied for seventh place on Wednesday afternoon at the DeBordieu Country Club course.

By virtue of her finish in the 2015 Big South Conference Women’s Golf Championship, Sloup earned a spot on the All-Championship Team.

The All-Championship Team honor goes to the top five finishers plus any ties. Sloup tied for fifth place after shooting a 36-hole total of 155 (76-79) at the DeBordieu Golf Club.

Due to periodic rain and lightning delays and a washout of Monday’s opening round, the scheduled 54-hole championship was trimmed to a 36-hole event.

The Winthrop women tied High Point after shooting a 36-hole score of 653 (321-332) over the par 72, 6,192-yard course. Coastal Carolina, the No. 1 seed going in, captured the championship by 16 shots over No. 2 seed Campbell and earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. Coastal finished at 614 (301-314) as the Chanticleers had the top two individual finishers in medalist Lena Schaeffner, the 2015 Big South Player of the Year, who shot 3-over 147 and Malene Krolboll Hansen who was a shot back at 148.

Sloup, who had been voted to the Big South All-Freshman Team last week, finished at 11-over 155 (76-79). Seniors Viivi Nuorti and Jennifer Dilger closed out their Winthrop careers by finishing 25th and 26th, respectively. Nuorti turned in rounds of 80 and 84 to finish at 164 while Dilger was a shot back at 165 (79-86). Another pair of seniors, Rachel Wyatt (Blythewood) and Anna Jenkins (Rock Hill) tied for 36th place after finishing at 171. Wyatt shot 86-85 while Jenkins shot 87-84 in their final Eagle performances.

By virtue of her finish in the tournament, Sloup earned a spot on the All-Championship team.

The All-Championship team honor goes to the top five finishers plus any ties. Sloup was joined on the team by Lena Schaeffner and Malene Hanson of Coastal Carolina, Larissa Carter from Radford, Nadine White and Brooke Bellomy of Campbell, and Gardner-Webb’s Sarah Bertram.
