Winthrop women’s lacrosse looks to continue unbeaten Big South run
Looking to stay atop the Big South standings, the Winthrop lacrosse team heads to Farmville, Va., on Friday for a showdown with the Longwood Lancers.
The Eagles are currently in a first place tie with Liberty; the two teams, both 4-0 in league play, face off Sunday at 1 p.m., in Rock Hill. Winthrop (12-2 overall) is riding a five-game win streak.
The Lancers (5-9, 3-1 Big South) are in a tie with High Point for third place in the conference. The Eagles will be looking for their first-even win over Longwood, which has been victorious in the team’s two previous meetings.
Women’s track and field
Marthaline Cooper was named Big South women’s field athlete of the week.
Cooper broke her own hammer throw school record at Western Carolina’s Catamount Classic with a toss of 58.12 meters. Cooper’s throw ranks her first in the Big South and 22nd in the NCAA East Region which qualifies her for the NCAA First Round at Jacksonville, Fla., in late May.
Men’s tennis
Winthrop (12-8, 5-3) , the reigning Big South champion, will be the No. 3 seed when the conference tournament commences Saturday in Asheville, N.C., and has a first-round bye.
Their first match will be against Radford on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Women’s tennis
The Eagles opened up defense of their Big South Conference Tournament Championship with a 4-0 elimination of host UNC Asheville at the Asheville Racquet Club.
Winthrop took the early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles competition, and the first three singles positions completed.
The Eagles (12-11) will continue their quest to retain the Big South tournament title when they face Coastal Carolina in the semifinals Friday at 2 p.m.
