Winthrop puts 3-game win streak on line at Georgia

Winthrop puts its three-game winning streak on the line Tuesday evening as it travels to Athens, Ga., to take on the Georgia Bulldogs at 7 p.m.

The Eagles (5-3 overall) are led by senior forward Xavier Cooks, who is coming off his first career triple-double as he posted 11 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists in Saturday’s win over Reinhardt. Cooks leads the Eagles in scoring (15.4 points per game), rebounding (9.9 rebounds per game), assists (4.1 assists per game) and blocks (1.4 blocks per game).

Anders Broman had a career-high 29 points the last time out and is second on the team in scoring at 13.9 points per game

Georgia (6-1 overall) has won back-to-back games over 21st-ranked St. Mary’s of California and Marquette.

Senior Yante Maten leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 17.6 points per game and is the Southeastern Conference’s active career scoring leader. Junior guard Turtle Jackson is second on the team in scoring at 12.3 points per game.

Winthrop’s Cooks earns Big South honors

CHARLOTTE Winthrop senior forward Xavier Cooks has been named the Big South men’s basketball player of the week.

Cooks averaged 17.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals in leading the Eagles to two wins last week. He opened with 24 points, 10 boards, three assists, two blocks and two steals in Winthrop’s victory at Furman. Cooks then followed with the Big South’s first triple-double in six years, as he tallied 11 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists against Reinhardt. Cooks also shot 59.3 percent from the field (16-of-27) in the two games.
