Winthrop senior forward Xavier Cooks was named the Big South men’s basketball player of the week on Monday.
Cooks led Winthrop to a 3-0 week with 17 points, 12 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.7 blocks in a pair of wins last week.
The senior from Wollongong, Australia nearly bagged a triple-double of 17 points, 14 boards and eight assists in the Eagles’ victory over Gardner-Webb Jan. 15. And in a nationally-televised win over UNC Asheville Jan. 18, Cooks had 15 points, 11 rebounds, five helpers and four blocks. He capped his week Sunday with 19 points, 11 caroms and two blocks at Presbyterian. Cooks was 20-of-37 from the field (54.1 percent) and 9-of-12 from the free throw line (75 percent) in the three wins.
Radford’s Carlik Jones was named the Big South freshman of the week for the fifth time this season.
