Winthrop men’s tennis opens NCAA tourney play against Georgia

Winthrop men draw Georgia in tennis regional

The Winthrop men’s tennis team learned on Tuesday afternoon during the NCAA Selection Show that the Eagles have been seeded No. 4 and will travel to Athens, Ga., to face No. 8 national seed Georgia in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Regional on May 8.

All matches will be played on the Henry Feild Courts at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Winthrop will face Georgia (21-4) at 2 p.m. following the other first round match between No. 3 seed Troy (25-6) and No. 2 seed Florida State (19-10).

The Winthrop men are making their sixth journey to a NCAA Regional after capturing the Big South championship on April 21. The Eagles will enter postseason play with a record of 15-8. This year marks the first NCAA appearance for Eagles coach Sergey Belov who took over the coaching duties last July.

“This is very exciting time for our tennis program,” said Belov. “Having the opportunity to play against a top team like the University of Georgia should prove to be a great experience for us. The seniors know what it takes to prepare for the NCAA Tournament and that should be a big help to our freshmen and other underclassmen.”
