Winthrop roundup: women’s basketball player earns weekly Big South award

Winthrop women’s basketball’s Anika Riley was named the Big South Women’s Basketball freshman of the week on Monday.

Riley, a guard out of Charlotte, NC, averaged 11 points and seven rebounds in two contests last week. In Winthrop’s victory over Longwood Tuesday, Riley notched her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She added eight points and three boards at Asheville on Saturday.

This is the first Big South weekly award for the Winthrop women’s basketball program this season.

Riley and the Eagles will return to action Tuesday night at the Winthrop Coliseum, hosting the Presbyterian Blue Hose at 7 p.m.

Winthrop men’s golf opens season in Florida

Winthrop golfer Sawyer Mills is tied for 58th after the first two rounds of the Sea Best Invitational in Ponte Vedra, Fla. Mills and Noah Peterson both shot first round 75’s to lead the Eagles. The final round is Tuesday morning.
