How to watch the Washington State vs Winthrop college basketball on Pac-12 Network
Winthrop’s four-game road trip that will span 7,300 miles and feature a traditional mid-major power and three high-major teams hasn’t gotten off to the best start.
But the Eagles have a chance to start anew on Monday night.
Winthrop (2-2) will play undefeated Pac-12 team Washington State (4-0) on the road Monday at 9 p.m. This will be the second time Winthrop and WSU played: The only other time was in the 2008 NCAA tournament — a 71-40 Washington State win.
Here’s what you need to know ahead of Monday’s game.

What to consider for Winthrop against WSU
Winthrop is arguably better than any team the undefeated Washington State Cougars have seen thus far this year — and vice versa.
WSU has averaged an impressive 86.5 points through four games by virtue of a 49.8% field goal percentage and an offensive attack that has translated into 26 free throws a game.
A big key to Washington State’s early success? The team’s big men. WSU has four guys listed over 6-foot-9 and has two starters who have yet to attempt a 3-pointer this season. (One of those guys is forward Mouhamed Gueye — a 6-foot-11, 210 pound freshman who has impressed in his 18.3 minutes per game.)
Here are three keys to the game for Winthrop ahead of Monday night.
1. The Eagles need Cory Hightower engaged on offense. The 6-foot-7 redshirt junior transfer kept Winthrop above water in the first half against Vanderbilt thanks to 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting beyond the arc. He didn’t score a point in the second half, though, and only took three more shots all game — a puzzling statistic. The Eagles will need Hightower engaged (and not in foul trouble) to adequately match up with WSU’s formidable frontcourt.
2. Winthrop will have to shoot well from deep. Look past the annoyingly basic analysis and look into Winthrop’s 3-point shooting percentage in its wins (50% and 46.7%) versus its losses (34.6% and 34.5%). The Cougars don’t shoot it well from deep — 32% on the season — and thus a decent shooting night gives the Eagles an advantage somewhere in the box score. (You can expect a lot of 3s, too, given WSU’s size advantage.)
3. Emerge from the second half inspired — or at least not uninspired. The Eagles have led or been down by one possession at halftime in their last two games. Those results? Both double-digit losses. Among the many ways Winthrop can stabilize itself in the second half of games: (1) Shoot better from the free-throw line to provide a stable source of scoring and (2) keep key players like redshirt junior big man DJ Burns out of foul trouble.
What is the guarantee Winthrop earns from playing Washington State?
WSU will pay Winthrop $90,000 and allow 25 complimentary tickets, The Herald previously reported. It’ll also pay for two nights of lodging in a Residence Inn at a cost that does not exceed $3,250.
