The long-awaited rematch is a go.

Top-seeded Longwood and 2-seeded Winthrop will face off in the Big South tournament championship game in Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte on Sunday at noon. The game will be a rematch of a regular-season game — a 92-88 Longwood win — that legitimized Longwood as a conference title contender and handed Winthrop its second of only two conference losses all year.

The winner of the game will earn the conference’s automatic qualifier bid into the 2022 NCAA tournament.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Longwood (25-6, 15-1 Big South) is looking for its first Big South conference tournament title and its first NCAA tournament bid. Winthrop (23-8, 16-2 Big South), conversely, is looking to punch its third ticket to the NCAAs in as many years.

Both teams have been tested thus far in the Big South tournament: Winthrop handled High Point by 17 in the quarterfinals and hung on to a nine-point win over Gardner-Webb in the semis. The Lancers needed overtime to beat North Carolina A&T in the quarterfinals before beating USC Upstate by nine to send them to Sunday’s championship game.

Longwood University is in Farmville, Virginia. Winthrop University is in Rock Hill.

The Eagles are 1.5-point favorites in the game, per SportsBookWire.
