Volleyball team wins tourney; baseball adds 17
Winthrop University won the Bash in the ’Boro volleyball tournament title Saturday morning with a 3-0 sweep of Tennessee State, finishing the weekend at 3-0.
Winthrop (3-7) started strong in the opening set, leading throughout. The Eagles opened a 10-point edge en route to taking the first set 25-17.
Winthrop again had a strong start in the second set, taking a 10-point edge for a 25-13 second-set win. Tennessee State played the third set much closer as the two teams were tied 11-11. Following the tie the Eagles allowed only five more points, taking the third set 25-16.
Brianna Gray led the Eagles with 10 kills. She also had seven blocks. Emma Weakland finished with eight kills and four blocks. Madilyn McCarty had 35 assists and five blocks.
Winthrop ends its 11-match road swing on Tuesday when its plays NC Central in Durham.
Baseball
Winthrop brings in 17 signees for 2016 — Coach Tom Riginos has announced his recruiting class for the 2015-16 season which includes 17 players from six different states, including nine from in-state.
“We are very excited to welcome the 2015 recruiting class to campus. I want to thank Coach (Clint) Chrysler and Coach (Rich) Witten and all the support staff for all of the hard work that goes into putting a quality recruiting class together,” Riginos said. “This class satisfies all of our needs for the 2016 season and beyond. All of these young men are of high character, great students, and come from great families. ”
