Winthrop’s Sloup leads women’s golf to Forest Oaks Fall Classic championship
The Winthrop women’s golf team captured the rain-shortened nine-team Forest Oaks Fall Classic by one shot after turning in a round of 296 on Friday at the Forest Oaks Country Club.
The tournament was scheduled as a 54-hole event and was shortened to a par-70 event over a 5,800-yard layout, but officials cancelled the final two rounds after efforts to begin the second round were futile following heavy rains and wind.
The first round on Friday was played in rain, but the Eagles were able to take a one-shot lead over Xavier behind the play of sophomore Ashley Sloup (Southport, N.C.), who fired a 1-under par 69 to earn medalist honors. She was the only player in the field to break or match par.
A pair of Eagle freshmen finished in the top 15 as Julie Reinertsen (Oslo, Norway) shot 73 to tie for fifth place and Chelsea Dantonio (Lancaster, N.Y.) had a 76 to tie for 13th place. Rounding out the Winthrop players were sophomores Louise Jeppesen (Helsingborg, Sweden), 78, tied for 25th, and sophomore Chandler Case (Rock Hill, S.C.) 80, tied for 31st.
Winthrop’s next tournament appearance will be Oct. 19-20 when the Eagles will travel to Spartanburg for Wofford’s Terrier Intercollegiate.
