Winthrop women’s lacrosse names captains
Winthrop women’s lacrosse coach John Sung announced that Maggie Montanye, Shannon Gallagher, Krista Frowein and Paige Jenkins will serve as captains.
“This is a good group that has been chosen to lead our team,” Sung said. “These four have put in many years of hard work and have proven themselves ready for this opportunity.”
Montanye, a senior defender, will serve as captain for her second year. She appeared in all 21 games last year as the central leader in the defense. She picked up 33 ground balls and forced 18 turnovers last season.
Gallagher, a senior midfielder who has been a strong offensive presence for the Eagles for three years, is a three-time First Team All-Conference selection. Gallagher totaled 73 points last season on 54 goals and 19 assists. Her quick stick was also an asset on defense as she caused 51 turnovers.
Frowein, a senior attacker saw time in 15 contests last season. She notched seven goals on 16 total shots with one goal being a game-winner.
Jenkins, a junior defender, was named to the All-Tournament Team last season. She is an important part of the Eagles’ defense and the team’s clearing game plan. She picked up 30 ground balls and forced 12 turnovers last season, appearing in all 21 games.
The reigning Big South champions will open the season at Jacksonville on Feb. 19.
Volleyball
Lourdes Rosario and Madilyn McCarty each earned Big South weekly awards.
Rosario, a freshman from Ciales, Puerto Rico, was tabbed as the Choice Hotels Player of the Week. She totaled 27 kills over two matches last week with 14 against Charlotte on Tuesday and 13 against Presbyterian on Friday, both victories. She hit .422 over those two matches with a .571 performance against the Blue Hose. She also added six digs and four blocks.
McCarty was named The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week, her second such award this season. McCarty had to two stellar performances in helping the Eagles to the 2-0 record this week. Against Charlotte on Tuesday she tied a career-high with 50 assists in the three-set victory. She followed that with 34 assists against Presbyterian for an average of 14 assists per set this week. She also added nine digs and four blocks.
The Eagles will return to the court this weekend for two road conference contests. Winthrop will face UNC Asheville on Friday and Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
