Winthrop rally falls short against GWU; men’s game moved to Oct. 21 date

The Winthrop volleyball team (8-12, 3-2) overcame a two-set deficit Saturday, but couldn’t complete the comeback, falling in five sets (27-25, 25-20, 21-25, 20-25, 15-12) to Gardner-Webb Bulldogs.

Lourdes Rosario notched a double-double and her second straight 20-kill performance, finishing with 22 kills and 14 digs. Emma Weakland recorded 18 kills to go along with four blocks. Dorien Den Otter led the Eagles with 33 assists while Maria Volstad finished with 25 digs.

The Eagles will continue conference play next weekend with road contests at High Point on Friday and Campbell on Saturday.

Men’s soccerThe Winthrop men’s soccer match against Presbyterian College scheduled for Saturday afternoon has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game has been rescheduled for Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. at Eagle Field.

Cross Country At Charlotte, the Winthrop women’s cross country team placed 15th out of 37 schools while the men were 21st out of 39 teams in the Royals Cross Country Challenge hosted by Queens University of Charlotte at McAlpine Park on Friday.

The top individual finisher for in the women’s 5K race was sophomore Emily Sparrow who was timed in 19:25.60 to finish 43rd out of 324 runners. The overall individual winner was Coastal Carolina senior Letitia Saayman who ran the course in 17:07.40. The women’s team winner was Davidson.

In the men’s 8K run, sophomore Sam DiBridge was the Eagles top finisher as he was clocked in 26:13.30 to place 59th out of 345 runners. The men’s individual winner was Lawrence KipKoech of team champion Campbell as he finished with a time of 23:32.30.
