Coulson’s goal lifts Winthrop soccer past nationally ranked Radford
Charles Coulson's goal in the 28th minute lifted Winthrop to a 1-0 victory over nationally ranked Radford, Tuesday evening in Big South Conference men's soccer action.
Winthrop’s victory - the team’s fourth straight - evens the Eagles’ record to 5-5 on the year, while they remain the only unbeaten team in the league at 3-0. The loss drops No. 25 Radford to 9-2-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big South. Winthrop will next put its winning streak on the line Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. when it hosts UNC Asheville.
"It was a good college game between two good teams," said Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko. "Both teams played hard and it could have gone either way."
Winthrop escaped a golden opportunity for Radford to take the lead in the 8th minute and took advantage of their first opportunity for a score when Rock Hill High grad Coulson found the back of the net for his third of the season. The goal came off a set piece in which James Skonicki served the ball into the box and Jordi Lluch redirected the ball in front to Coulson, who struck it first time from just outside the six-yard box.
It was the second straight season in which the Eagles slipped by a nationally-ranked Radford squad by a 1-0 score and just the fourth victory over a ranked opponent in the program's history.
The Eagles received a strong defensive effort and senior goalkeeper Fabian Broich made four saves to help keep the slate clean for his fifth shutout as an Eagle. Perhaps no save bigger than the one he made in the 8th minute when he got beat off the dribble, was able to work his way back into the goal mouth and deny Sivert Daehlie's shot off a cross straight out from goal. Broich also made a big save in the 81st minute when Garland Smith got free in the box and his shot to the lower left corner was just tipped wide of the post.
Radford's Aitor Pauseu Blanco finished with two saves as the Highlanders finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks. Both of Pauseu Blanco's saves came on one-on-one situations against Jordan Stoddart in the second half, keeping it a one-goal game.
