Lluch, Eagles defeat Campbell handily in Posipanko’s final regular season home game
Senior center back Jordi Lluch scored two goals to help lead Winthrop to a 4-1 victory over Campbell on Saturday.
With the victory the Eagles improve to 8-6-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the Big South as they clinch a Top 4 finish in the Big South. Campbell falls to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in the league and still has a shot to claim a Top 4 seed. Winthrop will wrap-up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 7 when it travels to Longwood for a noon kickoff.
Prior to the game there was a ceremony to recognize the nine Winthrop seniors as well as a ceremony for head coach Rich Posipanko, who coached in his last regular season home game. The win was the 389th of Posipanko’s 37-year career.
Lluch continued his hot streak for the week as he netted two second half goals to secure the win after scoring a goal and assisting on the other against Coastal Carolina this past Wednesday. He now has 10 goals on the season, which leads the team. His first came in the 48th minute on a header off a junior Max Hasenstab corner kick. Then he added another in the 78th minute when he ripped a shot into the right corner of the goal from the edge of the box.
The first five minutes of the game saw three goals as the Eagles struck first in the 4th minute. Senior Jordan Stoddart headed in a corner kick by Patrick Barnes at the near post. Campbell tied the game 34 seconds later on a corner kick when Matt Martinez headed in a Josh Signey service. Winthrop responded 26 seconds later when Stoddart cross the ball to the back post and Hasenstab headed the ball into the lower left corner for his ninth of the season and second game-winning goal.
Winthrop had a 19-12 advantage in shots and corner kicks were even at seven apiece. Fabian Broich made six saves to earn the win in goal as he improved to 8-2-1. Jeff Kennedy finished with four saves for Campbell.
Cross Country: The Winthrop men’s and women’s cross country teams finished sixth and seventh, respectively in the 2015 Big South Conference Championship Saturday at the Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg.
Campbell claimed the men’s team title freshman Lawrence Kipkoech who captured the individual title in the 8K with a time of 23:39.69. In the women’s race, High Point nosed out Coastal Carolina for the title by four points, but Chanticleer senior Letitia Saayman ran away with the individual championship by more than 23 seconds as she was clocked in 16:49.44.
Winthrop’s men were led by sophomore Sam DiBridge who finished 29th overall with a time of 26:54.06. Sophomore Cameron Ruppe was 34th (27:11.36). Third for Winthrop was junior Blake White who finished 43rd (27:37.28).
Junior Matthew Garcia-Lynn was 51st (28:56.53). Freshman John Oliver placed 59th (29:56.41). Rounding out the Winthrop men’s performances were freshman Scott Stroman (62nd, 30:08.51) and junior Matthew Egbert (30:49.42)
Tristan Langley, a redshirt senior, finished 18th as she led the women’s team with a 5K time of 18:45.52. Sophomore Emily Sparrow was 32nd as she was clocked in 19:17.21. Next for the Eagles was sophomore Victoria Burdette who was 46th (20:07.11). Freshman Francesca Schoning was two spots back in 48th place (20:14.01) and sophomore Jessica Van Cleave finished 55th (20:48.94). Senior Alexis Miller (58th, 21:10.08) and freshman Kelsey Ballou (64th, 21:34.94) rounded out the Winthrop women.
White and Langley were recognized as members of the 2015 Big South All-Academic teams.
