Winthrop men’s basketball hosts Truett-McConnell Tuesday night
Winthrop men’s basketball will look to start the season 2-0 when it hosts NAIA school Truett-McConnell on Tuesday night at the Coliseum.
The Eagles got the 2015-16 season off to a high-scoring start last Saturday, beating Hampton 102-95. It was just the second season opener in history in which the Eagles topped 100 points, and the first time since the 1989-90 season against Averett.
Five Winthrop players scored in double figures, led by fifth-year transfer Jimmy Gavin’s 26. Gavin, who came to Winthrop after two successful seasons at Division II Wisconsin-Parkside, hit 9-of-11 shots, including all five of his 3-point attempts.
“Jimmy is a very interesting kid,” said Kelsey after Saturday’s game. “The one thing I would say about Jimmy is he sure as heck doesn’t lack for confidence.”
Cleveland, Ga.-based Truett-McConnell is 2-3 after losing last Saturday 82-76 to Morris College. The Bears are coached by first-year man Jon Yeh.
Winthrop’s three-game home stand ends Friday when it hosts Jacksonville State. The Eagles then hit the road Nov. 24 to face USC Upstate, and N.C. State in Raleigh on Nov. 27.
