Winthrop’s Whitaker named Big South women’s basketball freshman of the week

Arianne Whitaker has been selected the Big South Conference Freshman of the Week for her performances last weekend at Oklahoma and Duke.

Whitaker, a 6-foot-2 center from Cincinnati, averaged 11 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks while shooting 61 percent from the floor (11-of-18) in two games against No. 17 Oklahoma and No. 14 Duke. She scored a team-high 14 points on 7-of-8 field goal shooting and had four rebounds in the Oklahoma game. She followed that performance with eight points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds against the Blue Devils.

Whitaker and her Eagle teammates will be back in action this weekend when they play in the Akron Classic. Winthrop will face the host Akron Zips at 10:30 a.m. on Friday in the tourney opener on Education Day before facing Ohio University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
