Winthrop women on the road for fifth straight game
The Winthrop women's basketball team will be on the road for its fifth straight game still looking for its first win of the season when it heads to Furman on Tuesday night. Tip time is 7 p.m. at Timmons Arena.
Winthrop and Furman are meeting for the 32nd time. The Paladins have won the last 11 meetings, including last year's 73-55 victory in Rock Hill. Winthrop's last win over Furman came on Dec. 2, 1989 at Furman. Winthrop dominated the early years of the series, winning the first 14 meetings.
Winthrop is coming off back-to-back road losses last weekend in the Akron Classic as the Eagles fell to the host Zips 76-59 before dropping a 75-54 decision to Ohio University. Both of those teams were preseason Mid-Major Top 20 picks. The Eagles are hoping to avoid becoming the ninth team in program history to open a season with five or more losses.
Furman is off to a 3-1 start that includes a 70-49 home win over Clemson last Saturday. The Paladins shot 10-for-22 from beyond the arc, and jumped out to a 46-18 lead in the first half thanks largely to their outside shooting.
The Eagles are led by 5-foot-10 junior forward Erica Williams, 5-foot-8 junior guard Aliyah Kilpatrick, and 6-foot-2 freshman center Arianne Whitaker. Williams is coming off an Akron Classic All-Tournament Team performance in which she scored 44 points in two games, including a season-high 23 against Ohio, while connecting on 44 percent from the floor, averaged 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 3.0 steals. Williams has now scored in double figures in 18 straight games going back to her sophomore season.
The game will be broadcast on 104.1 The Bridge with the pregame show starting at 6:30.
