Eagles will face revenge-minded Auburn
Winthrop faces its second straight SEC foe on Wednesday when it takes on the Auburn Tigers in Auburn Arena in a rare mid-week afternoon game. .
Winthrop enters the game with a 2-7 record after falling to No. 2 ranked South Carolina on Sunday while Auburn enters the contest with a 6-2 mark, including a 2-1 record at home. The Tigers will be looking for a bit of revenge following Winthrop's 56-54 home victory last season in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Winthrop outshot and out-rebounded Auburn in that game and got a pair of free throws from Aliyah Kilpatrick with 13 seconds left to pull off the upset.
Following Sunday's loss at South Carolina, the Eagles now have a 20-18 record vs. current members of the SEC, but since 1987 when Winthrop became a NCAA member, the record is 2-10 with those two wins coming against Mississippi State on a last-second field goal by former Eagle Dequesha McClanahan at the 2012 Hardwood for Hope Tournament in Cancun, Mexico, and last year against Auburn.
Winthrop is led by 5-10 junior forward Erica Williams who has scored in double figures in 23 straight games. She kept the streak alive with 10 points against South Carolina. She entered the Carolina game coming off three straight double-doubles and earned Big South Player of the Week honors last week after scoring a season-high 24 points in Winthrop's 81-62 victory over Gardner-Webb.
After the Auburn game, Winthrop will play its next game on Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. at the College of Charleston before taking a brief break for Christmas. Following Christmas Day the players will return to Rock Hill to begin preparing for a Dec. 29 Big South Conference game at UNC Asheville. That game will close out the 2015 portion of the schedule. Winthrop will ring in the New Year with a Jan. 2 home game against Longwood.
