Whitaker gets third Big South freshman honor of season

Winthrop center Arianne Whitaker has been named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Week after her two performances last week against UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb, the conference office announced Monday. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native has now received the honor three times this season.

Whitaker returned to the lineup after missing seven games and nearly a month due to a concussion. In her first game back against UNC Asheville, she scored a season-high 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds. She repeated that with an identical performance against Gardner-Webb last Saturday with another 15-point game to go along with nine rebounds. Whitaker also connected on 56 percent of her FGs (14-of-25) in the two games and had four blocks.
