The Winthrop lacrosse team was held in check offensively Wednesday, scoring only one second-half goal, falling 9-6 on the road to the Bucknell Bison.
The Eagles drop their second in a row, falling to 8-2 on the season. Bucknell improved to 6-2 on the year.
Alexis Linhardt got the scoring started for the Eagles, scoring less than two minutes into the contest on a feed from Abigail Blevins. Bucknell scored the next two and led with 24:55 on the clock. Less than a minute later Shannon Gallagher tied the contest at 2-2 as Kristen Shriver fed her the ball.
Bucknell again scored the next two and led 4-2 with 12:34 remaining in the half. Winthrop was unphased as they closed the half, scoring the final three. Shriver scored on a free-position shot with 11 minutes left to pull the Eagles within one. Katie Clark then scored the final two, one on a free-position and another on a dish from Logan McCarthy to send the Eagles into the half with a 5-4 lead.
In a very low-scoring second half, the Eagles were shut out for the first 23:56 of the second half. Bucknell scored the first three goals of the second half, taking a 7-5 lead with 12:35 remaining in the contest. Danielle Ellis scored Winthrop’s only second-half goal with 6:04 remaining on a feed from Shriver.
Following the goal Winthrop held possession but was unable to find the back of the net on a few shots. Bucknell regained possession with just over three minutes to play and slowly ran down the clock. The Bison were able to ice the game with two goals in the final minute, one with the Winthrop goalie pulled for an extra defender, for the 9-6 victory.
Shriver finished with one goal and two assist in the loss. Paige Jenkins led the Eagles with five ground balls. Alaina Girani totaled 10 saves while allowing eight goals.
The Eagles will continue on the road on Saturday when they head to Catonsville, Maryland, to face the Retrievers of UMBC at noon.
