Grant English had a grand slam and the Eagles’ held off a late Liberty charge for a 7-5 victory Saturday.
English’s second-inning shot helped Winthrop (15-12, 3-2) take a five-run lead in the second inning. Winthrop loaded the bases with a walk and back to back singles. Right fielder Jace Whitley smashed a hard hit single scoring Mitch Spires. On the following at bat, English connected with his first long ball on the season for the 5-0 lead.
Liberty (16-13, 3-2) responded in the third with six hits scoring four runs cutting the Eagles’ lead to 5-4.
The Eagles extended their lead in the seventh when Anthony Paulsen doubled to center field scoring Tyler Asbill who had singled earlier in the inning. Paulsen later scored on a passed ball for the 7-4 lead.
The Flames added a run in the ninth but were unable to get over the hump as Winthrop won in a 7-5 final.
Winthrop’s starting pitcher Zach Sightler picked up the win pitching 6.2 innings while allowing eight hits, four runs, two walks, and ringing up four strikeouts along the way. Freddie Sultan fanned two of the four batters he faced in seventh inning while Zach Cook notched his third save of the season.
Mark Lowrie had two of Winthrop’s seven hits in the win.
The Eagles will go for the series’ sweep Sunday at Winthrop Ballpark at 2 p.m.
