Radford brings offense to rout sloppy Eagles

Radford rattled out 19 hits en route to a 15-8 Game 2 rout of Winthrop Saturday at the Winthrop Ballpark.

Radford (10-25, 4-7) jumped to an early lead in the first as leadoff batter Chris Coia scored. Coia reached on an error before scoring on a Shan Johnsonbaugh single.

Winthrop starting pitcher Zach Sightler left in the second inning after allowing three earned runs when the Highlanders added another four runs on four hits with one Winthrop error extending the lead to 5-0.

Winthrop (17-18, 5-6) battled back in the second with five runs on five hits. Jace Whitley led the inning off with a single to left field. Roger Gonzalez followed with a single of his own. Babe Thomas walked to load the bases. Casey Parker doubled to right field scoring Whitley and Gonzalez. Kyle Edwards followed with a single to right field scoring Thomas. Tyler Asbill then reached on a fielder’s choice scoring Parker to tie the game at 5-5.

The Eagles took the lead in the fourth when Brandon Fite scored off a Gonzalez sacrifice fly. Whitley then singled to shortstop scoring Paulsen for a 7-5 lead who had previously singled to center field. Winthrop added another run in the sixth when Fite’s bunt single brought in Parker.

Radford regained its momentum with a sixth-inning sacrifice RBI fly to tie the game. The Highlanders continued to rally when they took the lead at 11-8 in the seventh, scoring five runs on five hits. Additional runs came in the eighth (one) and ninth (three) innings.

Sightler fanned two batters before his exit and is now 4-2 with a 4.12 ERA.Nate Pawelcyzk (0-2) received the loss.

Winthrop will conclude the weekend series against Radford when they play Game 3 Sunday at Winthrop Ballpark at 2 p.m.
