Winthrop baseball wraps regular season with win over Gardner-Webb
Winthrop salvaged Game 3 after dropping the first two of the series to Gardner-Webb in a 7-4 come from behind triumph at John Henry Moss Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Winthrop is now 28-25 (12-12 Big South) on the season, while Gardner-Webb falls to 36-19 (14-10 Big South).
Winthrop struck first in the top of the 3rd scoring on a Tyler Asbill single to third base, knocking in Jace Whitley who reached earlier on a bunt.
Babe Thomas gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead with a solo shot in the seventh.
Gardner-Webb would rally for four hits scoring four runs in the bottom of the 7th to seize the 4-2 lead.
Winthrop exploded for five runs on five hits and two errors from Gardner-Webb in the ninth inning. Roger Gonzalez started the rally with a single through the left side. Mark Lowrie then doubled to send Gonzalez home. Mitch Spires then reached on a throwing error and Lowrie was able to score. After Whitley was walked, he later scored on a passed ball. Brandon Fite hit a single to right field scoring Kyle Edwards. Anthony Paulsen then knocked in Asbill.
The Eagles’ starter Zach Sightler pitched 6.2 innings allowing only four hits and two earned runs. Sightler now has a 4.00 ERA for the season. Zach Cook was credited with the win and is now 3-3 on the year with a 3.63 ERA.
