South Carolina football losing highly-rated running back to transfer portal

South Carolina is set to lose one of its young running backs to the transfer portal.

Sophomore tailback Djay Braswell plans to enter the portal when it officially opens next Monday, Dec. 9. Braswell posted a message on his X (formerly Twitter) page Tuesday afternoon.

“This experience has truly been special to me,” Braswell wrote. “I have created lifelong friendships and memories, which I will always cherish. My time at USC has helped shape and mold me and I am truly appreciative of the opportunities I’ve received here.”

A former four-star prospect out of Georgia, Braswell enrolled at South Carolina during the summer of 2023 and contributed as a true freshman last season.

When the Gamecocks dealt with injuries to its running back room late in the 2023 season, Braswell —built at 6-foot, 210 pounds — played in three of South Carolina’s final four games — carrying the ball 12 times for 25 yards.

This season, though, after South Carolina brought in four running backs — freshman Matthew Fuller as well as three transfers: Rocket Sanders (Arkansas), Oscar Adaway III (North Texas) and Jawarn Howell (SC State). Braswell fell down the depth chart. The sophomore did not record a stat in 2024.

He will enter the portal with three years of eligibility remaining.

Braswell is the sixth player expected to enter the portal. South Carolina finished the regular season at 9-3 and will wait to see its playoff or bowl destination Sunday.
