Texas quarterback commits to South Carolina football
South Carolina has landed its first quarterback commit in the Class of 2027.
On Friday, three-star QB Jerry Meyer III committed to the Gamecocks, a pledge that new USC offensive coordinator Kendal Briles deserves a lot of credit.
This is the second time that Meyer — a 6-foot, 170-pound Texas native — has committed top Briles, with the first coming last August when the offensive coordinator was with TCU.
Briles got the Gamecocks’ OC gig in December and South Carolina offered Meyer about a month later. Less than two weeks after Briles handed Meyer a USC offer, he decommitted from TCU.
“Obviously, I was previously committed to TCU with Coach Briles, and I always kind of thought I’d be a great fit for him and kind of what he does with the offense,” Meyer told Phil Kornblut in late March. “But I think it goes deeper than that. ... We’ve got to work as one when we’re on the same team and on the same field.”
Meyer told Kornblut on Thursday night that his commitment was likely happening this weekend and that the Gamecocks and Houston were his top two schools. He also visited Baylor, Mississippi State, and Arkansas.
“I’ve been on pretty much every visit that I needed to be on over the past month or so,” Meyer said. “... I went up there about a week or so ago, and I was in communication with them prior to that, and pretty much every day after that. Really good relationship establishing there, and got a great relationship with Coach Briles. They’ve reached out pretty much every day since then. They’re going to sign only one (quarterback).”
Per the 247 Composite Rankings, Meyer is a three-star prospect who ranks as a Top-60 quarterback in America.
During his junior season at Waxahachie High, Meyer completed nearly two-thirds of his passes for 2,700 yards and 33 touchdowns.
His commitment, too, comes as South Carolina has received visits from a number of other 2027 quarterback prospects, including three-star recruit DJ Hunter.
The quarterbacks currently on the Gamecocks roster are LaNorris Sellers, Cutter Woods and true freshman Landon Duckworth. Sellers is likely to head to the NFL after this season.
