Three South Carolina football freshmen most likely to make an impact this season

Shane Beamer was not shy about South Carolina’s intentions in the transfer portal. Coming off a 4-8 season last year, the Gamecocks needed talent, but they really needed experienced talent.
And, no, Beamer didn’t copy the college basketball model and go hunting for any 26-year-old professionals. But if he could find a transfer who had played as many snaps as most 26-year-old professionals — those were the guys Beamer coveted.
“They’re not just older guys, but they’ve got a lot of production,” Beamer said in February of the portal class. “They’ve been through battles. And we didn’t have enough of that last year. We’ve certainly increased that and wanted to be very aggressive in trying to get not just older guys but production.”
Beamer, though, loves competition and has no qualms about benching a player for someone with one-tenth the career snaps if that person is practicing more consistently.
That leads us to South Carolina’s 19-man freshman class, which has a number of talented players who will compete for starting spots immediately. Here are three poised to make a big impact in 2026.
1. Darius Gray (OL)
A four-star prospect from Virginia, Gray was the second-highest ranked signee in the Gamecocks’ 2027 recruiting class.
In a South Carolina offensive line room that has completely flipped over from last season, every spot is up for grabs. The only reason to think Gray might not see the field right away is the fact that he didn’t enroll until the summer, missing spring practice.
But he seems to already be on the right track.
After finishing his senior year of high school at 265 pounds, South Carolina wanted him between 290 and 295 pounds when he enrolled. On its roster, he’s listed at 302 pounds.
2. Julian Walker (edge rusher)
Walker turned heads after showing up to his first spring practice looking like he just returned from bodybuilding camp. He is an 18-year-old true freshman while also being the Gamecocks’ tallest (6-6) and heaviest (255 pounds) edge rusher.
He bears so many similarities to Dylan Stewart, the former five-star who started right away and developed into one of the SEC’s top pass rushers. And there’s a shot Walker starts this season lining up opposite Stewart, though the Gamecocks added a number of transfers who may also take that spot.
In any case, it’s almost a certainty that Walker — the four-star signee from Dutch Fork — will play in 2026; and the hope for South Carolina fans is that Walker does enough to take over in 2027 when Stewart’s in the NFL.
3. Noah Clark (DT)
If there was any hesitation about the chances of Clark — South Carolina’s ninth-ranked 2026 signee — contributing right away, he answered that in the spring.
The 6-5, 345-pound defensive tackle was named South Carolina’s co-defensive newcomer of the spring — an award for which transfers are also considered.
That honor signals that Clark is going to be in the Gamecocks’ defensive line rotation, which often includes at least six guys. Will he perform well enough this fall to snag a starting spot? Perhaps. But he will certainly have chances to make plays on Saturdays this year.
