Northwestern’s Purple golf team edges York in playoff for Lady Trojan tournament title
The Northwestern Purple team won the team title, while South Pointe’s Jodi Tindall claimed the individual crown in the inaugural Lady Trojan Golf Tournament at Waterford Golf Club on Friday afternoon.
The Trojans beat the York Cougars in a playoff to pick up the team trophy. The two teams tied after 18 holes with scores of 387.
Northwestern played Leighann Faulkner and Kayleigh Renke in the playoff, while York countered with Sarah Smith and Amiyah Starnes. The championship was decided on the first playoff hole.
“I thought we played well as a team today,” said third year Northwestern coach David Rector. “Our players have been dedicated all season. They have improved quite a bit, and the showing today should give us some confidence heading into the region tournament.”
The Nation Ford Falcons were third with Fort Mill fourth, Rock Hill fifth, and Northwestern’s Gold team sixth.
Tindal played as an individual because South Pointe did not field a team this season. She burned up the 4,937-yard layout with a 67. That was three strokes better than Clover’s Alyssa Campbell, who also played as an individual.
“This is the best score I have ever had on this course,” said Tindal, who is a senior at South Pointe. “I made a lot of putts today, but every aspect of my game was good. My iron play was especially good.”
Tindal won the longest drive contest on the 16th hole, while Jordan Guyton of Dreher was closet to the pin on the eighth hole.
There were 33 golfers in this year’s field, and Rector feels like the event had a very good beginning.
“I am pleased with what we have started,” said Rector. “We had some superb parents, volunteers, and Waterford Golf Club officials who made it a quality event. I am looking forward to making this tournament bigger and better with each passing year.”
