High school notes: Rock Hill High hosting second annual Rock Strong Competition March 21

Rock Hill High is hosting the second annual Rock Strong Competition March 21 at the school.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 9:30, with the event starting at 10 a.m. The entry fee is $15 per participant and spectator admission is $2. The competition will consist of three lifts – one repetition of max bench press, one repetition of max parallel back squat and maximum repetitions of bench press (predetermined by weight division).

The entry fee includes participation, a Dri-Fit shirt and a “swag bag.” There will be seven competing divisions, including one for female participants//, divided into the following: 150 pounds or below; 151 to 175; 176 to 200; 201 to 225; 226 to 250; and 251 pounds or above.

School team scores and standings will also be kept, with teams consisting of at least five competitors and only one competitor counting per weight division. The event is for students in grades 9 through 12 and school identification is required at registration. Contact Christopher Price for additional information at CPrice@rhmail.org.



They’ll be joined from the area by Lewisville’s Chris Rodriguez and Christian Laws, and Clover’s Chase Griffin, Garrett Goldberg and Keeshan Bailey.

Basketball

Regions release awards: Some regions are releasing All-Region basketball awards. Region 3-3A put out its boys’ team Monday, and it includes several locals, including Chester’s Tommy Sanders, who was named the league’s player of the year after earning All-State honors last week. Cyclones sophomore Malik Williams also made the All-Region team.

Marveon Mobley, Pete Branham and Quay Brown from South Pointe made the cut, as did Lancaster’s Lewis Johnson and Nehemiah McGriff. South Pointe’s Melvin Watson led his Stallions to the region title and he was named coach of the year accordingly.

2014-15 All-Region 3-3A boys

Tommy Sanders, Malik Williams- Chester; Marveon Mobley, Quay Brown, Pete Branham- South Pointe; Kurtlin Rice, Quan Hardy- Union County; Nehemiah McGriff, Lewis Johnson- Lancaster; Tay Cook- Clinton; Christian Thomas- Broome.

Region 4-2A released its boys award winners last week and Indian Land’s Darnell Rogers was named the league’s player of the year. He was joined by teammate Quantra Taylor, while Andrew Jackson’s Danny Wright was named the league’s coach of the year.

2014-15 All-Region 4-2A boys

Zach Sellers, Dalvin Taylor, Wayne Jones- Cheraw; Darnell Rogers, Quantra Taylor- Indian Land; Travay Hatten, Tristan Stewart- Central; Garrett Crenshaw, Druw Rollings- Buford; Corey Walters, Dontarius James- Andrew Jackson.

With girls teams in both regions still competing in the postseason as of Monday – Indian Land in 2A and Lancaster in 3A – girls All-Region teams haven’t been released yet. Region 3-4A has released its girls season awards, with Gaffney’s Tania Cornwell taking home the player of the year title. Northwestern’s John Bramlett was named coach of the year after leading the Trojans to a region title, while Rock Hill’s Modesty Fobbs and Gaffney’s Niya Goudelock shared newcomer of the year honors.
