South rises to sweep in North-South all-star basketball games
The Lower State ruled the day in Saturday’s S.C. Basketball Coaches Association North-South All-Star games at Lexington High, as the boys’ and girls’ South teams each won their games.
In the boys’ game, the South squad — featuring White Knoll’s Najee Garvin — posted a 110-107 win after making a comeback in the final 90 seconds of overtime.
The North squad trailed most of the game. But with 10 minutes left in regulation, Keenan’s Antwan Holmes knocked down two free throws that made it a one-point game.
Garvin answered with a layup for the South team to make it 87-84.
The North kept plugging and, with less than two minutes left, Carlos Dotson of Dorman closed the gap with a layup and free throw to send the game into overtime.
The North started the overtime strong, with York’s Deshaw Andrews draining a 3 on the first possession. A.C. Flora’s James Murray-Boyles added a free throw for a four-point lead less than 30 seconds in.
“It felt good to come out and play my last high school game,” said Murray-Boyles. “I wanted to come out with a ‘W’ but it didn’t work out that way, but it’s OK. We had a good time.” He finished with nine points.
Holmes posted 11 points, all in the second half.
Hillcrest’s Randall Shaw led the game with 25 points and was named the North MVP.
The South hit 14 triples, led by Christian Jeffords, Brady Shock and Marques Sumner, who each hit three.
GIRLS: Irmo coach Monica Williams led the South to a 54-49 victory.
West Florence’s Kortni Simmons earned MVP honors, posting 15 points for the North, and Lakewood’s Sonora Dengokl added 12 points.
“It was so much fun, we had a blast, and we had a great group of kids,” Williams said.
“At this level,” Williams said. “they all are so good. The way we practiced and competed, it was just great to see them come together.”
Dutch Fork forward Morgan scored four points but had a strong defensive presence for the North.
