Clover scored the first six points of the second period, which was part of a 12-2 run. The closest York (3-4) would get after that was within five with under a minute left in the game.

The Cougars did get it down to 35-28 headed to the fourth, but the Blue Eagles scored the first five points of the fourth quarter and kept the home team at arm’s length in the final eight minutes.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Clover 59, York 56 (OT)

Luke Darling hit a game-tying three-pointer with 24 seconds left in regulation, and led the Clover Blue Eagles with 12 points as they defeated the York Cougars 59-56 in overtime Friday night in York. Clover put three others in double figures as Heze Massey had 11, and both Andrew White and Qwashun Garrett had 10.

It was a stark contrast from last Friday night in Clover when the Blue Eagles won 80-53.

The Cougars (3-4) had a chance to tie it with 7.5 seconds left in overtime, but senior Malcolm Kennedy missed two free throws with Clover leading 58-56. After a Blue Eagle free throw, Kennedy could only get off a step-back, fading three as time expired that came up well short. Kennedy led all scorers with 18. He drained two free throws in regulation to give York a three-point lead just before Darling’s three.

York closed the first half on a 9-0 run to cut the Clover lead to 28-26, and Cameron Jones basket inside tied things at 28 to start the second half. Jones and Jaquarius Guinn were big inside for York all night with rebounds and putbacks. Jones had 12 points and Guinn eight.

The Cougars led 44-40 after three quarters, and held the lead the entire fourth until Darling’s three. York sophomore point guard Gabe Carroll fouled out with 3:11 to play in regulation, and the Cougars missed his ball-handling. He also hit three three-pointers.

There were eight lead changes in the game. Clover moves to 4-2 on the year.
