Preps roundup from Dec. 10: News from Southern Slam; Clover girls basketball rolls

Check out the scores and highlights from local high school sports action this weekend.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Clover wins twice

The Clover Blue Eagles continued their winning ways with a pair of non-region victories.

This past Friday night they nipped Ashbrook, 56-53, in a game at Ashbrook.

Aylesha Wade led Clover with 19 points. Janelle Carter added 17 points and hauled down 13 rebounds, while Lauren Deal added 11 points to the winning effort.

On Monday night, they ripped Dorman, 81-60, in a contest at Clover.

Clover led 19-16 after one period and was ahead 38-30 at halftime. Dorman made a run in the third period and cut the deficit to 53-49, but the Blue Eagles regrouped and pulled away in the final eight minutes to get the win and avenged their only loss of the season.

Wade led the charge for the Blue Eagles with 37 points and six steals. Destiny Worthy contributed 11 points and hauled down eight rebounds, while Janelle Carter scored ten points and pulled down five rebounds and came up with five steals.

Clover is 5-1 on the year.

Catawba Ridge defeats Northwestern

The Catawba Ridge Copperheads toppled the Northwestern Trojans, 42-27, in a non-region game at Northwestern Monday night.

The Copperheads raced to a 15-8 lead after one period. They outscored the Trojans 12-4 in the second quarter for a 27-12 lead at halftime. Northwestern cut into the deficit in the third period, and when it was over the Copperheads led 38-27. Catawba Ridge won the final period, 4-0, to close out the game.

Victoria Jordan led Catawba Ridge with 14 points. Brielle Windisch added ten to the winning cause. Mycah Green led Northwestern with nine points

Catawba Ridge is 5-2 on the year, while Northwestern is 0-4.

Nation Ford tops Indian Land

The Nation Ford Falcons routed the Indian Land Warriors, 82-33, in a non-region game at Nation Ford Monday night.

The Falcons raced to a 28-7 after one period and increased it to 49-14 at the half. They cruised from there for the one-sided victory.

Kelci Adams led the assault for the Falcons with 36 points.

The Falcons are 5-2, while the Warriors are 1-4.

Spartanburg tops Northwestern

Spartanburg defeated the Northwestern Trojans 42-29 in a non-region game Friday night at Northwestern.

The score was tied 10-10 after one period, and Spartanburg took a 20-16 lead after two periods. Northwestern cut the deficit to 24-21 after three periods, but Spartanburg pulled away in the fourth quarter to earn the win.

Parker Sexton led Northwestern in scoring with 13 points.

Byrnes edges Nation Ford

Byrnes edged the Nation Ford Falcons 51-47 in a non-region contest at Byrnes Friday night.

Nation Ford is 4-2 on the year.

South Pointe defeats First Assembly

The South Pointe Stallions toppled First Assembly 61-52 in a non-region battle at First Assembly Saturday afternoon.

The Stallions are 4-0 on the year.

Indian Land defeats York

The Indian Land Warriors defeated the York Cougars 54-37 in a non-region game at Indian Land Friday night.

The Warriors led 9-7 after one period and 27-14 at halftime. The Cougars regrouped and cut the deficit to 38-29 after three quarters, but the Warriors countered and pulled away in the final eight minutes for the victory.

York is 2-1 overall.

Chester edges Columbia

The Chester Cyclones edged Columbia, 45-41, in a non-region game at Chester Friday night.

Chester is 3-0 on the year.

York Prep defeats Lewisville

The York Prep Patriots toppled the Lewisville Lions, 41-26, in a non-region game at Lewisville on Friday night.

York Prep led 7-6 after one period and 18-12 at the half. They outscored the Lions 12-4 in the third quarter for a 30-16 advantage and went on from there for the victory.

Taylor Southav paced the Patriots with 14 points. Lewisville was led by Allie Keels with seven points and eight rebounds.

York Prep is 3-1 on the year, while the Lions are 0-3.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Nation Ford topples Indian Land

The Nation Ford Falcons defeated the Indian Land Warriors, 58-40, in a non-region game at Nation Ford Monday night.

The score was tied at 8-8 after one quarter and 21-21 at halftime. The Falcons turned it up in the third period and took a 43-27 lead into the final quarter. They outscored the Warriors 15-13 in the final eight minutes to close out the game.

Petey Tuipulotu paced the Falcons with 25 points, and Tyler Thaxton added eight to the winning effort. Daveon Qwick led the Warriors with nine points.

Nation Ford is 3-4 on the year, while Indian Land dropped to 3-2.

Northwestern tops Spartanburg

The Northwestern Trojans placed four players in double figures and defeated Spartanburg 84-54 in a non-region game at Northwestern Friday night.

The Trojans broke a 15-15 tie after one period and took a 33-29 lead at intermission. Northwestern used some hot shooting in the third period and had a 58-41 cushion when it was over. They continued the assault in the fourth period.

A. J. Thompson led Northwestern with 22 points. Mason Griggs added 16, Qua Allison scored 15, and Dwight Priest chipped in 11.

The Trojans are 3-0 on the year.

Ashbrook gets by Clover

Ashbrook defeated the Clover Blue Eagles 59-47 in a non-region game at Ashbrook Friday night.

Ashbrook led 10-8 after one period and improved it to 22-15 at intermission. They were up 39-31 at the end of the third quarter and held on down the stretch to claim the victory.

Clover is 1-1 on the year.

Byrnes defeats Nation Ford

Byrnes defeated the Nation Ford Falcons 65-28 in a non-region game at Byrnes Friday night.

Byrnes led 16-4 after one period and upped the count to 33-14 at halftime. They cruised from there for the victory.

Petey Tuipulotu led the Falcons with 10 points.

York blasts Indian Land

The York Cougars blasted the Indian Land Warriors 82-50 in a non-region game at Indian Land Friday night.

The Cougars broke an 11-11 tie after one period and took a 33-20 lead at halftime. A strong third quarter produced a 62-37 advantage when it was over, and they coasted from there for the one-sided win.

The Cougars are 2-1 on the year.

Columbia topples Chester

Columbia defeated the Chester Cyclones 73-61 in a non-region game at Chester Friday night.

The Cyclones are 1-2 on the year.

York Prep dominates Lewisville

York Prep Patriots defeated the Lewisville Lions 57-27 in a non-region game at Lewisville Friday night.

D. J. Barksdale led the Patriots with 11 points. He got offensive help from Kendall Davis and Aaron Johnson, both of whom scored 10 points. J. R. Hardin led the Lions with 11 points

York Prep is 3-1 on the year, while Lewisville is 1-1.

Great Falls edged Andrew Jackson

The Great Falls Red Devils edged Andrew Jackson, 62-56, in a non-region game at Great Falls Friday night.

Great Falls is 2-1 on the year.

WRESTLING

Area teams fare well at Southern Slam

Five local teams competed in the Southern Slam in Greenville over the weekend.

The Indian Land Warriors finished fourth in the 47-team field, which consisted of teams from five states. The South Pointe Stallions were 12th, and the Rock Hill Bearcats were 17th. The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets were 22nd and the York Cougars finished 26th.

Several area wrestlers turned in outstanding results.

Indian Land had five competitors place in the top eight. Drew Enders was seventh at 106, Max Yegge finished fifth at 113, Dylan Layton was third at 120, Soloman Cortez was fourth at 138, while Xavier Dreese was fifth at 170.

South Pointe had three top eight finishes. Kemoni Reaves was fifth at 106, Spencer Cox finished sixth at 120, and Isaac Ekanem claimed the top spot at 195.

Rock Hill had three in the top eight. Colton Smith was fourth at 106. Bailey Wilkins recorded his 200th career win on the way to a second place finish at 132. Manny Velazquez was sixth at 170.

Fort Mill also place three in the top eight. Sebastian Colon was seventh at 113, Joshua Sturgeon finished eighth at 132, and Joshua Cizmadia was third at 160.

York had two top eight awards. Kaleem Heard won the title at 120, while Daiyan Heard was sixth at 126.
