Boys game: ‘We all shot it well’

The Clover Blue Eagles dress to impress in pregame, with blue blazers stitched with the block-C and blue eagle, blue and white striped ties, and khakis.

“That’s something I’ve thought about doing for a while,” Clover head coach Bailey Jackson said.

“They looked pretty sharp.”

Indeed they did: The home team got 21 first-half points from Markus Nastase to build a 37-18 lead at halftime, and it stiff-armed the York Cougars in the second half to hold onto that edge and gain a 67-48 rivalry win Friday night in Clover.

York (3-2) cut the lead to 13 with a 12-2 run in the third period, but that’s as close as they would get. Nastase led all scorers with 27 points, and Malik Proctor had 19 to lead York. Zy Brown had 13 for the Cougars, and Donavon Fitzgerald also had 11 for Clover.

The Blue Eagles (2-3) hit six three-pointers in the first period, three from Nastase, to lead 19-8 after the first eight minutes.

“We all shot it well,” Jackson said. “But that’s what we’re capable of. We haven’t shot it well the last two games, and we played teams that play defense just like York does.”

Nastase had 12 points in the second period.

“Markus, when he’s seeing a big basket he hits a lot of shots,” Jackson said.

The Cougars gave the Blue Eagles trouble at times by applying pressure with their quick guards, especially during the third period run to get back into the game.

“That helps us when we play teams in our region like Northwestern,” Jackson said. “We have things we can improve on and we certainly will.”

Clover had some foul trouble at times but York couldn’t capitalize, hitting only 17-of-31 from the free throw line.

Both of Clover’s teams will return home against Kings Mountain on Monday.
