South Pointe and Clover girls basketball teams show strength on court, in SCBCA polls

In this week in high school sports, boys’ basketball saw a few upsets — but no one could dethrone the elite South Pointe and Clover girls basketball teams.

Clover (14-1) is the top-ranked team in 5A, and South Pointe (13-0) is No. 2 in 4A, per the latest South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association poll.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Clover routs York

The Clover Blue Eagles routed the York Cougars, 63-18, in a non-region game at York Tuesday night.

The Blue Eagles raced to an 18-3 lead after one period and never let up. They were in front 36-11 at halftime and coasted from there for the one-sided win.

Aylesha Wade led Clover with 19 points. Janelle Carter joined her in double figures with 10.

Clover is 14-1 on the year. York is 3-7 overall.

South Pointe wins twice

The South Pointe Stallions won a pair of non-region games earlier in the week.

On Tuesday night they toppled the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets, 55-42, at Fort Mill.

The Stallions took a 13-8 lead after one quarter. They were in front, 26-21, at halftime. The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to 38-32 after three periods, but South Pointe pulled away in the final quarter for the win.

Randi Neal led the Stallions with 18 points. Trinity Adams joined her in double digits with 17.

The Stallions followed the next night with a 98-20 rout of the Northwestern Trojans.

South Pointe took control from the opening tap and cruised to the one-sided victory.

Twelve players scored for the Stallions in the game. Adams led the way with 25 points. Jamia Blake added 18 and Neal tossed in 13.

The two wins left South Pointe with an overall mark of 13-0. Fort Mill’s loss dropped them to 8-6. Northwestern fell to 3-8 with its loss.

Rock Hill tops Lancaster

The Rock Hill Bearcats toppled the Lancaster Bruins, 49-35, in a non-region game at Lancaster Tuesday night.

The ‘Cats led 15-8 after one period, but Lancaster cut it to 24-19 at intermission. Rock Hill pulled away in the third period for a 38-26 lead and moved on from there for the victory.

Mya Wise led Rock Hill with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Unique Burch added nine points and pulled down four rebounds.

The Bearcats are 11-4 overall on the year.

Nation Ford rips York Prep

The Nation Ford Falcons ripped the York Prep Patriots, 80-32, in a non-region contest at York Prep Tuesday night.

The Falcons led 27-8 after one period and 54-13 at the half on their way to the one-sided win.

Nation Ford is 9-6 overall, while York Prep is 5-5 on the year.

Catawba Ridge topples North Gaston

The Catawba Ridge Copperheads defeated North Gaston, 46-30, in a non-region game at North Gaston Wednesday night.

The Copperheads are 9-5 on the year.

Buford blasts Lewisville

Buford blasted the Lewisville Lions, 55-11, in a Region 4-2A game at Lewisville Tuesday night.

Buford led 11-2 after one period and 23-9 at halftime. They moved on from there for the win.

The Lions are 1-8 overall and 0-2 in region play.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

South Pointe wins twice

The South Pointe Stallions picked up a pair of non-region wins earlier in the week.

On Tuesday night they nipped the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets, 53-51, at Fort Mill.

The Yellow Jackets led 12-10 after one period, but South Pointe rallied and took a 27-24 at halftime. The Jackets came back and forged a 38-38 tie after three periods, before the Stallions won the close battle in the fourth quarter.

Montae Joseph led South Pointe with 17 points, and Jeriyah Burris chipped in 12. Fort Mill was led by Jordan Herman with 17 points and Keyan Mims with 16.

On Wednesday night the Stallions toppled the Northwestern Trojans, 77-61, at South Pointe.

The two wins left the Stallions with an overall mark of 6-4. Fort Mill dropped to 8-5 with its loss, while the Northwestern loss left the Trojans with a record of 9-4 on the year.

Rock Hill downs Lancaster

The Rock Hill Bearcats came from behind in the final quarter and edged the Lancaster Bruins, 54-53, in a non-region contest at Lancaster Tuesday night.

Rock Hill took a 14-8 lead after one quarter, but the Bruins cut the deficit to 26-25 at halftime. A Lancaster rally gave them a 39-36 lead after three periods, but the ‘Cats charged back in the final period for the win.

Shane Blakeney led the way for the Bearcats with 15 points. Luke Bracey added nine to the winning attack.

The ‘Cats are 7-5 on the year.

York upends Clover

The York Cougars defeated the Clover Blue Eagles, 61-51, in a non-region game at York Tuesday night.

York took a 20-10 lead after one period and extended it to 30-16 at halftime. York padded their advantage to 49-31 when the third quarter was in the books, and they held off a Clover rally in the final eight minutes to earn the win.

York is 5-5 overall on the year, while Clover is 9-5.

Catwaba Ridge topples North Gaston

The Catawba Ridge Copperheads toppled North Gaston, 60-52, in a non-region game at North Gaston Wednesday night.

Carter Hendrick led the Copperheads with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Davante Gonzalez chipped in nine points to the winning cause.

Catawba Ridge is 6-8 on the year.

Lewisville defeats Buford

The Lewisville Lions defeated Buford, 71-50, in a Region 4-2A game at Lewisville Tuesday night.

The Lions are 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the region.

Great Falls tops Camden Military

The Great Falls Red Devils topped Camden Military 68-51 in a non-region game Thursday night.

Kelton Talford led the Red Devils with 25 points. Kell Brown added 10 to the winning effort.

Great Falls has won seven in a row and sports a 12-3 overall mark.

York Prep defeats Nation Ford

The York Prep Patriots defeated the Nation Ford Falcons, 47-39, in a non-region game at York Prep Tuesday night.

York Prep raced to a 14-4 lead after one period, and they were in front, 33-23, at the half. The two teams played on even terms in the third quarter and the Patriots led 40-30 when it was over. The Patriots hung on down the stretch to get the win.

Kendall Davis led York Prep with 20 points. Aaron Johnson joined him in double figures with 10. Petey Tuipulotu, Andrew Meacham and Ty Strawhorn each scored 10 points for the Falcons.

York Prep is 10-2 on the year, while Nation Ford is 7-9.
