Clover, Legion Collegiate girls’ basketball teams top Big 5 rankings this week

Its record won’t cause a double-take, but the Legion Collegiate girls’ basketball team has impressed in its inaugural season — and has cracked the top-2 in The Herald’s second-ever Big 5 rankings.

The Lancers are led by a slim oligarchy of seniors — including Jermany Mapp and Somer Wilson, who signed with Hampton and South Carolina State, respectively, prior to playing a game in their team’s inaugural season. Friday, the Lancers only allowed Lewisville to score 10 points.

But even without the recent result, Legion Collegiate has plenty to hang its hat on this season: The team has performed well against the state’s elite — losing a one-possession game to perennial powerhouse Byrnes in December, and earning a double-overtime win against Westwood, a team that recently beat South Pointe by 10 points. They also hung tough with North Augusta, the reigning state champions.

Clover, which recently pulled off a close win at home against Rock Hill, moves to No. 1 in the rankings. South Pointe, after its loss to Westwood this week, moves to No. 3.

Here are last week’s Big 5 rankings.
