10 local high school basketball players named to All-State teams

Ten basketball players from area high schools were named to their respective All-State teams on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior guard Mason Grigg, who recently committed to Coastal Carolina, and junior guard AJ Thompson hail from 5A Northwestern.

The two contribute to the Trojans’ formidable backcourt. Thompson, at 5-9, has averaged 16.3 points and 4.1 assists per game this season — and Grigg, at 6-2, has averaged 16.8 points and 5.9 rebounds a game.

Grigg was also selected to play in the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association’s North-South All-Star basketball game on March 21.

Destin Clark, who recently signed to Wingate, will represent 3A Indian Land. The 6-4 senior point guard has averaged 20 points per game this year, and he’s been a large reason why the Warriors, after only winning four games in the 2018-19 season, are still in the 2020 playoffs.

Clark led his team to a victory over Newberry in the first round of the state playoffs on Tuesday.

Demetric Hardin, a 6-2 senior guard from Lewisville, was named to the 2A All-State team. Per head coach Mike McCray, Hardin was a significant reason why the Lions were able to turn their season around and make the 2020 state playoffs.

Hardin was also a Shrine Bowl selection in football this season.

Kelton Talford, a Winthrop signee, and DJ Adams will represent Great Falls. Talford, the 6-7 bouncy big man, also was named to the Carolina Classic All-Star game earlier this month. Adams, at 6-foot, earned several accolades on the football field as well.

On the girls’ side, two players are on the 5A All-State team: Junior guard Aylesha Wade will represent Clover — a team that blew Mauldin out on Tuesday night, propelled by Wade’s 20 points — and Kelci Adams, at 5-9, who averaged 21 points per game in her senior season, will represent Nation Ford.

Finally, two South Pointe guards are on the 4A All-State team: senior guards Randi Neal (5-9) and Jamia Blake (5-8).

Neal and Blake each had games to remember in the first round of the 2020 state playoffs. Neal led the team with 34 points and Blake scored 22 and added 11 assists and six rebounds.
