Rock Hill volleyball’s Jada Rouse is The Herald’s latest fall sports athlete of the week

The results are in: The Herald’s latest fall sports athlete of the week is Rock Hill volleyball’s Jada Rouse.

Rouse, a senior outside hitter for the Bearcats, had 16 kills and 24 digs in a 3-1 loss at Northwestern on Sept. 22. Two days later, Rouse had 24 kills and 11 digs in a victory at Spring Valley that went five sets.

Rock Hill is 4-3 this season. Last year, the Bearcats went 22-12-1, making it to the 5A state playoffs before falling in the first round to Hillcrest. After the team’s final match last season, head coach Cindy Elder told The Herald that her team, despite the loss, was stacked with young talent, saying “the future looks very bright for us.”

There were 17,790 votes cast in this poll: Rouse won with 32% of the vote; Fort Mill swimmer Drew Fey earned 26% of the vote; and Northwestern cross country runner Mason Thomas earned 11.5% of the vote.

Meet the athlete of the week finalists

Drew Fey, Fort Mill swimming: The Fort Mill senior captain led his team to victory at the Fort Mill Fallout at the Fort Mill Aquatic Center, winning the 100 freestyle while anchoring both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays to first-place finishes. Fey posted personal-best split times in both the 200 freestyle relay (22.38) and 400 freestyle relay (49.29) at the same meet.

Ashlan Glasgow, Legion Collegiate volleyball: The Lancers’ senior libero notched 20 digs, 32 service receptions, 10 aces, four assists and two kills to lead Legion Collegiate to wins over Central Pageland and Cheraw this week. Glasgow had nine digs, six aces and 18 service receptions in a 3-0 victory over Central Pageland this past Tuesday. The next day, she recorded 11 digs, four aces, and 14 service receptions in a 3-0 sweep at Cheraw. Legion Collegiate is 4-2 this season.

Vivian Harris, Nation Ford golf: The Nation Ford freshman had a big week on the course, leading the Falcons in three different matches. Harris shot 89 (18 holes) to lead her team individually (tied for 11th-place) at the Trojan Invitational in Rock Hill on Monday, Sept. 21. Two days later, Harris shot a 42 in a team loss at Boiling Springs.

Harris finished off her week with another 42 at Tega Cay, where Nation Ford beat Rock Hill but lost to Fort Mill in a three-team match. Harris, who has been medalist in seven of Nation Ford’s 10 matches, is part of a young team — one with no seniors and a freshman and two eighth graders in the team’s top five.

Austin Lockhart, Nation Ford swimming: The senior has won every individual race he has competed in this season. Lockhart broke school records in winning the 50 freestyle (20.82) and 100 backstroke (51.45) at the Fort Mill Fallout at the Fort Mill Aquatic Center on Thursday. Lockhart, a Naval Academy commit, also broke the school record in the 100 freestyle earlier this season.

Benjamin McCall, Clover cross country: The Clover junior ran a personal-record 17:14.43 to win the Clover home meet earlier this week. McCall also led his Blue Eagles’ team to a 37-point victory in the same four-team event.

Olivia Morales, Indian Land cross country: The Warriors’ freshman has finished in the top two of all four races she has competed in this season. Morales finished 2nd overall at Lancaster on Tuesday, Sept. 22. She also won a race at South Pointe earlier this season (running a 22:13.90).

Aiden Roberts, Chester cross country: The Chester senior captain led the Cyclones’ voluntary cross country workouts this summer. Roberts’ efforts are paying off this season, too: He ran a 22:39.24 at Clover, leading his team, while finishing 36th overall in the race. Roberts also ran a personal-best 22:25 in a home meet earlier this season.

Sarah Taylor, Catawba Ridge tennis: The Catawba Ridge junior captain didn’t drop a set in wins at Lancaster and at York this week. Taylor beat her opponent from York, 6-0, 6-0, on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Two days later, Taylor beat her Lancaster opponent, 6-0, 6-1. Taylor is 6-2 overall this season for the undefeated Catawba Ridge team (6-0).

Mason Thomas, Northwestern cross country: The Trojans’ senior ran a 16:59 to finish fourth overall in the Cavalier Classic at Dorman High School in Spartanburg this past weekend. Thomas is an all-state runner and finished third at the 5A state championships last year.
