High school golf: Catawba Ridge and these York County players head to state championships

The Catawba Ridge Copperheads girls’ golf team is headed for the state championship. They were the only team of the seven area teams who played in the Upper State Tournament to make it to the final round, which will be played at Crescent Pointe in Bluffton on Monday and Tuesday.

The Copperheads finished third in the 4A event. Their team total of 364 was only 14 strokes behind Pickens, which was the top team in the tournament.

The Copperheads were led by Katherine Mann, who finished second in the individual standings with a round of 80. Kate Gilmer carded an 83, which was good enough to tie for the third spot. Eileen Zeoli had an 87, while Reagan Lynch completed the scoring with a 115.

The York Cougars and the South Pointe Stallions also qualified for the 4A Upper State Tournament, but failed to make the next round. York finished 10th with a team score of 447, while South Pointe was 12th at 477.

In 5A four local teams played in the Upper State Tournament, but none of them qualified for the next round, which is to be played on Monday and Tuesday at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence.

The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets had the best showing of the four. They finished ninth and missed the State Tournament by one spot. The Jackets had a team score of 349.

Mackenzie Finn led Fort Mill with an 83, and Cayla Capuzzo turned in an 87. The Jackets’ scores were completed by Greycen Baker and Kesley Delcourt, both of whom carded rounds of 88.

The Nation Ford Falcons shot a team score of 355 and were 11th. The Northwestern Trojans had a 398 and were 13th, while the Rock Hill Bearcats were 16th with a team score of 487.

Nation Ford was led by Vivian Harris with a 74. She was 10th in the individual competition and qualified for the state tournament as an individual. Kate Griggs (88), Sara McCaskill (94), and Fharren Coleman (99) completed the Falcons’ scoring.

Northwestern was led by Avery Kesler with an 84. Honley Wilson (95), Katherine Willis (102), and Valerie Good (117) rounded out the Trojans’ score card.

Rock Hill was paced by Kaelynn Thurston with a 101. Alexa Banks (123), Garielle Thomas (129), and Jade Infinger (134) completed the ‘Cats’ total.

Mallory Dover of Clover played in the event as an individual. She fired a 78 which was good enough for the 15th spot overall, and she earned a place in the state tournament.
