Rock Hill-area basketball updates from holiday tournaments, plus full region standings
The two-week holiday break provided great opportunities for several area basketball teams to get in some games as they continue to prepare for region play, which will begin very soon.
Here’s what you need to know.
Catawba Ridge, South Pointe show out
In the girls’ division, the Catawba Ridge Copperheads won three games and won the inaugural Copperhead Tournament. The Rock Hill Bearcats won all three of their games in the YC Winborn Classic, while the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets won two of three contests in the same event.
The South Pointe Stallions won two of three games in the Lexington Tournament, and the Clover Blue Eagles also won two of three games in the Cherokee Christmas Tournament. The Northwestern Trojans won two of three games in the Trojan Christmas Tournament, while the Andrew Jackson Volunteers won a pair of contests and earned the Volunteer Christmas Tournament title.
In the boys’ division, the York Prep Patriots won five games during the break. They did not play in a tournament.
The Catawba Ridge Copperheads won five of six games. They won three games and claimed the title in the Chesnee Christmas Tournament and followed that by winning two of three in the inaugural Copperhead Tournament.
The Clover Blue Eagles won three games and finished first in the Bennie Bennett Memorial Tournament.
The Rock Hill Bearcats won two contests and won the SubStation Tournament in Gaffney.
The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets won three games in the Bennie Bennett Memorial Tournament. The Jackets also won two of three games in the Chesnee Christmas Tournament.
The Andrew Jackson Volunteers won both of their games and claimed the Volunteer Christmas Tournament trophy.
The Northwestern Trojans won two of three games in the Cayce Christmas Tournament, while the South Pointe Stallions picked up a pair of wins in three outings in the Greenville Christmas Tournament. The Great Falls Red Devils won two of three in the Chesterfield Christmas Tournament.
The season continues this week with more games for all area teams. A few teams will be playing some region games as they battle for spots in the playoffs, which start at the end of February.
A few big matchups will highlight the schedule for the opening week in January. Perhaps the top two are rematches of earlier season contests. On Friday, South Pointe hosts Rock Hill, and on Saturday, South Pointe is are at home to battle Northwestern.
