Who’s playing this week? Here’s what to know about the high school football schedule
Nine games featuring 13 area teams are on the schedule for the opening week of the 2022 football season.
Four of the games are big rivalry games, while another features a battle between last year’s state champions in the top two classifications. Here is a quick preview of the games.
Heathwood Hall at Great Falls (THURSDAY)
Great Falls, which played shorthanded in the jamboree last Friday night, hopes to have all of its players as they take on one of the better teams in the South Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association. The home field advantage should help in this one as they try to build on last year’s success.
Lancaster at Chester (THURSDAY)
This is a big rivalry game between two schools that are less than 20 miles apart. These two teams have played some classic games in the past. Lancaster looked good in its jamboree last Friday night. Chester played 4A Richland Northeast to a tie despite the fact that they had several starters missing.
Rock Hill at Northwestern
This is a crosstown rivalry. It is the first leg in the City Championship, and it is for bragging rights. Northwestern has a high powered offense, which Rock Hill’s defense will have to contain. The Rock Hill offense will have to maximize each possession.
Catawba Ridge at Fort Mill
This is another crosstown rivalry. It is the first leg in the Fort Mill City Championship, and it is for bragging rights. Catawba Ridge was impressive in the jamboree this past Friday night. Fort Mill, which looks to be improved, struggled a little bit.
Indian Land at Nation Ford
A big rivalry game between two schools less than 10 miles apart. Bragging rights are at stake. Indian Land was most impressive in its jamboree this past Friday night, while Nation Ford struggled on both sides of the ball.
Buford at Blacksburg
Buford is hoping to get things turned around in Ed Susi’s second year at the helm. A road win against a quality opponent would give them some confidence.
Lewisville at East Clarendon
Lewisville is hoping to get the Leon Boulware era started in the right way. They are coming off an impressive showing in the jamboree this past Friday night. A road win against a tough opponent will get things headed in the right direction.
Legion Collegiate at Providence Day
Legion Collegiate opens its season on the road against a strong Charlotte independent school. The game will be somewhat of a gauge to see where the Legion Collegiate program is at this point in its development..
Gaffney at South Pointe (SATURDAY)
South Pointe, the defending 4A state champion, and Gaffney, the defending 5A state champion, collide in what is expected to be one the biggest games in the state in the opening week. It does not get much better than that.
