Rock Hill Herald Fall Sports’ Athletes of the Week
Tori Baldino, Nation Ford Tennis: The seventh-grader won 10-3 in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles and won her doubles’ match 6-2, 6-1 to help Nation Ford to 4-3 win over Clover to clinch the Region III, 5A title, Oct. 11.
Baldino also won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles as Nation Ford beat Catawba Ridge, 5-1, Oct. 13.
Baldino is 7-6 in singles’ play for Nation Ford (9-1) this season.
Isaac Campbell, Fort Mill Cross Country: The Yellow Jackets’ sophomore ran a personal-best 15:54.52 to finish ninth at the Starlight Run at Riverside High, Oct. 15.
Campbell broke 16-minutes for the first time in his high school career.
Campbell’s run also helped the Fort Mill boys’ cross country team to a victory at the same event.
Ben Carroll, Indian Land Cross Country: The Warriors’ sophomore ran an 18:23.10 to win the 5K at York High, beating the field by 10 seconds, Oct. 11.
Carroll’s run also helped the Indian Land boys’ cross country team to a third place finish at the same event.
Carroll ran a personal-best time of 17:58 at the Hare and Hounds’ Invitational at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, Sept. 17.
Olivia Corbi, Fort Mill Swimming: The Yellow Jackets’ junior won state titles in all four events she competed in, the 200 and 500 freestyle and the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, at the S.C. 5A state championships at University of South Carolina, Oct. 8.
Corbi became only the 10th swimmer in 25 years to accomplish the four-title milestone as she also helped the Fort Mill girls’ swim team to a 5A state title the same day.
Libba Faircloth, South Pointe Cross Country: The Stallions’ eighth-grader ran a 20:52.60 to win the 5K race at Rock Hill High, Oct. 12.
Faircloth’s run also helped her South Pointe girls’ cross country team to victory at the same meet.
Faircloth ran a personal-best 19:53.55 at the Bob Jenkins’ Coaches’ Classic at Newberry College, Oct. 8.
Mason Haynes, Nation Ford Cross Country: The Falcons’ sophomore ran a 15:21.40 to finish as runner-up at the Starlight Run at Riverside High, Oct. 15.
Haynes’ efforts also helped the Nation Ford boys’ cross country team to a third-place finish at the same event.
Kennedy Martin, Nation Ford Volleyball: The Falcons’ had 80 kills, 27 digs, 15 aces, six assists and four blocks as Nation Ford beat Clover, Fort Mill and Spring Valley this week.
Martin has 36 kills, nine digs, seven aces, three blocks and two assists in a 3-2 win over Clover, Oct. 10.
She followed that up with 18 kills, three digs, four aces, three assists and a block in 3-0 win over Spring Valley, Oct. 11.
Martin also had 26 kills, 15 digs, four aces and one assist in a 3-1 win at Fort Mill, Oct. 13.
Martin has 451 kills, 167 digs, 34 blocks and 32 aces for a Nation Ford team (21-9) that has won eight straight games.
Sara McMullen, Clover Tennis: The Blue Eagles’ junior won at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-4 in at 4-2 loss to Blythewood, Oct. 10.
The next day, she won a three-set match, 6-1, 3-6, 10-5, in a narrow 4-3 loss to Nation Ford.
McMullen is a perfect 14-0 in singles’ play for Clover (9-5) this season.
Mary Vecchio, Andrew Jackson Volleyball: The Volunteers’ senior had 28 kills, 14 service receptions and seven aces as Andrew Jackson won road games at Central Pageland (Oct. 11) and Cheraw (Oct. 13) this week.
Andrew Jackson is 5-6 overall this season.
Eileen Zeoli, Catawba Ridge Golf: The Copperheads’ senior shot a 74 (36-38) to win the Region III, 4A title at Chester Golf Club, Oct. 10.
Zeoli’s efforts also helped the Catawba Ridge girls’ golf team to a region title, and the Copperheads’ qualify for the 4A Upper State Tournament at Saluda Country Club in Williamston, Oct. 17.
