Rock Hill Herald Fall Sports’ Athletes of the Week Nominees
Alivia Cleveland, Fort Mill Cross Country: The Yellow Jackets’ freshman ran a 19:34.10 to win the Region III, 5A title at Sandhills’ Research Center in Columbia by 34 seconds, Oct. 26.
Cleveland’s run also led the Fort Mill girls’ cross country team to a region title by 37 points.
Mason Haynes, Nation Ford Cross Country: The Falcons’ ran a 16:03.01 to win the Region III, 5A title by 35 seconds at Sandhills’ Research Center in Colmubia, Oct. 26.
Haynes’ efforts also led the Nation Ford boys’ cross country team to a region championship.
Libba Faircloth, South Pointe Cross Country: The Stallions’ eighth-grader ran a 19:24 to win the Region III, 4A title by 13 seconds at York, Oct. 27.
Faircloth’s efforts led the South Pointe girls’ cross country team to a runner-up, region finish.
Faircloth began the season by running a 21:50 at the Providence Invitational and has steadily gotten faster with each meet this season.
Lilly Grace Kennington, Great Falls Cross Country: The Red Devils’ eighth-grader ran a 28:31 to win the Chester County Championships at Great Falls, Oct. 27.
The Great Falls’ girls’ cross country team also won the Chester County Championships.
Kennington also ran a 28:31.50 to finish fourth-place at the Region III, 1A meet at Great Falls, where her team also finished as runner-up.
Katherine Mann, Catawba Ridge Golf: The Copperheads’ senior shot a two-day total of 163 (19-over par) to finish tied for 12th-place at the 4A State championships in Hilton Head, Oct. 24-25.
Mann’s classmate, teammate, Eileen Zeoli, also shot a two-day, 163, to help the Catawba Ridge girls’ golf team finish fifth place as a team at states.
Matthew Prete, Lancaster Cross Country: The Bruins’ senior ran a 16:33.50 to win the Region III, 4A title by 27 seconds at York, Oct. 27.
Prete’s run also helped the Lancaster boys’ cross country team to a runner-up finish at the same meet.
Luis Rosa, Lewisville Cross Country: The Lions’ senior ran a 22:20.20 to finish sixth overall at the Region III, 1A meet at Great Falls, Oct. 25.
Lewisville finished third as a team at the region meet.
Rosa also ran a 20:22 to win the Chester County Championships at Great Falls, Oct. 27.
The Lewisville boys’ cross country team won the Chester County title at the same meet.
Torrie Sowell, Andrew Jackson Volleyball: The Volunteers’ senior outside hitter had 13 kills, 32 digs, 16 service receptions, three aces and two assists as Andrew Jackson beat Woodland (second round, 3-2, Oct. 25) and lost at Bishop England, 3-0, in the third round of the AA state playoffs, Oct. 27.
Andrew Jackson finished the season 11-6 overall.
