Rock Hill Herald Fall Sports’ Athletes of the Week Nominees
Kymyia Brown, York Girls’ Basketball: The Cougars’ senior center averaged 14 points and seven rebounds as York went 2-1 in the Y.C. Winborn Holiday Classic at Rock Hill High, Dec. 21-23.
Brown had 11 points in a 46-31 loss to Airport in the opening round of the tournament, Dec. 20.
The next day, Brown has 12 points in a 41-16 win over Bethune-Bowman.
Brown capped the tournament with 20 points in a 42-35 win over White Knoll, Dec. 22.
York is 6-4 overall this season.
Makailah Davis, Catawba Ridge Girls’ Basketball: The 5-foot-5 sophomore scored 23 points, had five steals and three assists in a 64-35 win over Belmont South Point, Dec. 21.
Davis is averaging 13.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and two steals per game for a Catawba Ridge team (7-3) that has won five straight games.
Mike Jones, Indian Land Basketball: The 5-foot-9 freshman scored 22 points, had seven rebounds and five assists in a 79-58 win over South Mecklenburg in the Battle of the Border Classic in Independence, Dec. 22.
Jones followed that up with 32 points, including four three-pointers, four rebounds, three steals and two assists in a 65-58 victory over Sun Valley at Independence, Dec. 23.
Jones is averaging 21.1 points, four rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game for an Indian Land team (10-2) that has won five straight games.
Grant Lovette, Catwaba Ridge Basketball: The 6-foot-2 senior scored 24 points, had 11 rebounds and seven assists in a 78-42 win over Blacksburg (SC) in the opening game of the Chesnee Roundball Classic, Dec. 20.
Lovette also had 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists in a 66-37 win over Boiling Springs in the tournament semifinal, Dec. 21.
Lovette finished off the tournament with 21 points and 12 rebounds in a 53-50, overtime victory over Fort Mill in the championship game, Dec. 22.
Lovette was named the most valuable player of the tournament for the second straight year as Catawba Ridge repeated as team champions.
Lovette is averaging 15.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game for Catawba Ridge (9-2) this season.
Clayton Rygol, Nation Ford Wrestling: The Falcons’ senior won the 220-pound title at the Elizabeth Memorial Holiday Classic at Mallard Creek, Dec. 22-23.
Rygol, who has won two tournaments this season, is 21-3 overall this year.
Tamia Watkins, Legion Collegiate Girls’ Basketball: The 6-foot-1 sophomore averaged 11 points and 14 rebounds per game for Legion Collegiate as the Lancers went 1-2 in the Cherokee Invitational Tournament, Dec. 20-22.
Watkins is averaging 15.3 points and 9.6 rebounds per game for Legion Collegiate (10-3) This season.
Marcia Watt, Clover Girls’ Basketball: The 5-foot-6 junior doubled his season average with 11 points, including three, three-pointers, two assists and two steals in a 42-29 win over Northwestern, Dec. 20.
Watt is averaging 4.8 points, two assists, 1.6 steals and 1.6 rebounds per game for Clover (6-2) this season.
Ghaleb Wilson, Andrew Jackson Basketball: The 6-foot-2 junior scored 24 points, had five rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks in a 75-46 win over Lewisville, Dec. 20.
Wilson is averaging 17.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for Andrew Jackson (5-3) this season.
